'Newcastle are top of the list': Journalist makes transfer claim about striker deemed 'one of the greats'
Newcastle United will soon “join the discussion” over a potential move for Gabriel Barbosa, according to Dean Jones.
The transfer insider, writing on GiveMeSport, claims Gabigol’s representatives will offer the player to the Magpies.
Newcastle were apparently in pursuit of Gabigol back in January, but a move failed to materialise.
Now, with the Magpies preparing to kick on in the Premier League, links between the two parties are resurfacing.
In addition, Newcastle have reportedly pulled out of the race to sign Hugo Ekitike.
90min claimed that Newcastle had agreed a deal with Reims for the 20-year-old forward and personal terms with the player were also in place.
However, negotiations with the player’s agent – who wanted additional fees and payments – apparently proved too much to overcome.
As a result, Newcastle have reportedly walked away from the deal.
While they remain interested in Ekitike, they’re now pursuing other options, added the report.
“Possibility of a move to the Premier League”
Gabigol – who is also on Wolves’ radar – could potentially be one of those options, according to Jones.
“Newcastle are set to join the discussion over a potential move for Gabigol to the Premier League,” he wrote.
“They are to be offered the player imminently as agents scope out the possibility of a move to the Premier League.
“Wolves have been credited with interest in Gabigol in recent days.
“And it is true they are exploring the situation after being made aware of his availability.
“Yet other clubs will be given the chance to sign him too with Newcastle at the top of the list, along with West Ham.”
“He’s already gone down in history”
Gabigol has been in incredible form for Flamengo over the past few years.
His tally reads 153 appearances, 100 goals and 28 assists.
“I think Gabigol has everything to be the greatest striker in Flamengo’s history,” club legend Zico said last year.
“It’s getting there. His performance got better and better, consolidating himself as one of the greats.
“He’s already gone down in history. He is young and can do much more, and hopefully, he can do it.”
In addition, Gabigol was impressive at Santos, where he came through the ranks before returning on loan from Inter.
He registered 43 goals and 13 assists from 125 appearances for them.
Admittedly, Gabigol’s time at Inter Milan didn’t go to plan.
However, this was several years ago, and his game has developed since then.
It looks as though Gabigol wants to try his luck in Europe again – Newcastle might as well take a look.
