'I’ve been assured': Journalist claims Newcastle remain in talks over 29-goal Arsenal target

Newcastle United and Arsenal are just two of the clubs who have been linked with Gabriel Barbosa in recent months.

Back in November, 90Min claimed the Magpies and the Gunners were both eyeing the Flamengo striker.

Now, Newcastle are busy bolstering their ranks in pursuit of Premier League safety, while Arsenal will certainly need a new striker this year.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s future at the club is uncertain, while Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah are out of contract in summer.

As well as Newcastle and Arsenal, the likes of West Ham, Everton and Aston Villa were also being linked.

That said, a striker is now no longer a priority for neither the Magpies nor the Gunners.

Newcastle have brought Chris Wood in, while Arsenal have until the end of the season to source replacements.

Nonetheless, transfer insider Dean Jones claims the Magpies are still open to bringing Barbosa to St James’ Park.

“I’ve been assured Newcastle’s interest in Gabigol is ongoing,” he wrote on GiveMeSport.

“I wouldn’t say he’s a prime target in this moment.

“But dialogue is still open with his representatives in case they can find a way to get him through the door.

“Ideally, they want him on loan.”

Earlier this week, Sky Sports claimed Barbosa was going to tell Flamengo of his intention to leave the club and move to England.

The Brazilian has been in great form, scoring an impressive 29 goals from 43 appearances for club and country in 2021.

Barbosa is known for his technical skills, creativity and use of tricks on the ball. And of course for being prolific in front of goal.
