Newcastle saw a bid rejected by Atalanta for Teun Koopmeiners during the January transfer window.

That is according to Il Bianconero.

So, what is the situation involving Teun Koopmeiners and Newcastle? Let’s take a look…

Newcastle saw Teun Koopmeiners bid rejected

Well, it was no secret that Eddie Howe wanted another central midfielder in January – that was made apparent following an approach to sign Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City.

Ultimately, Newcastle failed to sign anybody in January – although efforts were made, according to Il Bianconero.

The Italian news outlet believe the Magpies offered €40m (£34m) to sign Koopmeiners, although Atalanta were firmly against selling the Dutchman in the middle of the season.

Il Bianconero add that the Serie A outfit also want at least €60m (£51m) for the Netherlands international, so Newcastle’s bid was destined to fail for several reasons.

Juventus are also keen to sign Koopmeiners – and are preparing a summer swoop to bring the Atalanta No.7 to Turin.

The 25-year-old has impressed in 26 appearances so far this season, scoring seven goals while also providing four assists.

Who is Teun Koopmeiners?

Newcastle could well resurrect their interest in Koopmeiners this summer amid doubts over the future of Joelinton at St James’ Park.

If that does happen, Howe could get his hands on a tremendous technician.

Koopmeiners has been compared to none other than Real Madrid No.8 Toni Kroos as a result of his immense technical ability, with Bert Baving – the Dutchman’s agent – also likening him to Jorginho and Nemanja Matic.

He told FC Inter News: “It’s always difficult to make comparisons but he’s a Toni Kroos, Jorginho, (Nemanja) Matic or (Manuel) Locatelli type, only that Teun will score more goals than any of these players.”

Howe already has one set-piece specialist in Kieran Tripper, and if Koopmeiners did end up on Tyneside, Newcastle would become even more dangerous from dead ball situations thanks to the addition of another technician.

Be sure to keep an eye on this situation going into the summer, as another bid from Newcastle cannot be ruled out.
