Neville criticises Everton ace Pickford for role in Denmark opener
Gary Neville has hit out at Everton ace Jordan Pickford after his mistake for Denmark’s opener last night.
The Three Lions were handed a shock after Mikkel Damsgaard struck a sensational free-kick to open the scoring. However, the former defender was critical of Pickford’s positioning for the goal.
Gareth Southgate’s men recovered to beat the Danes 2-1, thanks to goals from Simon Kjaer (OG) and Harry Kane.
However, the Everton man endured a tough night, especially with the ball at his feet. Pickford ended the game with the worst pass accuracy, a meagre 38.7%, the worst for England.
On whether the 27-year-old should have done better, Neville told ITV (broadcast on 07/07/2021 8:55 pm): “Most definitely. It’s a long way out and I always think if the ball goes in the corner, then you have no problem. But, the ball goes in the centre of the net and your goalkeeper has got to save that.
“The big problem is that ultimately, he’s blocked and he doesn’t see it until late and all of a sudden he goes late himself. He’s got to get himself in a position whereby he can go early, like I say it’s right above him, almost, and he’ll be really disappointed.”
Criticism of Everton ace Pickford is harsh
This tournament has been almost perfect from the Three Lions. From the defence right through to attack, some of the performances have been near-flawless.
And Everton ace Pickford has played a big part, making the criticism from Neville somewhat harsh.
To keep five consecutive clean sheets is a phenomenal achievement from the Blues ‘keeper. And some of the saves he’s made have ensured victory.
Furthermore, the free-kick was a stunning strike from the 21-year-old Damsgaard. And even Neville highlighted the Danish wall which ended up blocking the ace’s vision.
However, it all proves irrelevant after the side went on to secure victory and their place in Sunday’s final.
