'Never seen anything like him': Liverpool told they have the next Wayne Rooney in their ranks

Liverpool fans only have a few more days to wait until their club are back in competitive action.

Jurgen Klopp’s first-team squad have been preparing in Dubai alongside a number of academy stars.

A report from the BBC has highlighted one of those youngsters; 17-year-old Ben Doak.

Signed from Celtic for £600,000, Doak is rapidly rising through the ranks at Anfield.

After playing in the Old Firm derby in one of just two senior appearance for Celtic, Doak made the move south of the border.

The right-winger started the season in Liverpool’s under-18s.

However, a fantastic UEFA Youth League campaign, where he recorded four goals and four assists, saw him introduced to the under-21 side.

His brilliant form has now earned Doak his senior debut for Liverpool, coming on in the Carabao Cup against Derby County.

He’s been with Klopp’s squad in Dubai, and impressed in his brief appearance against AC Milan.

Hopes are very high for Doak, and his agent, Jackie McNamara has heaped praise on the teenager.

In fact, Doak has already been compared to Wayne Rooney, such is the level of ability he’s demonstrated at such a young age.

It’s a huge claim, but one Liverpool and Scotland fans will be hoping he can fulfil.

The BBC report that the teenager earned the nicknamed ‘Wazza’ due to his ‘stature, talent and barrelling style’.

His agent McNamara spoke about how his move from Celtic to Liverpool transpired.

“In fairness, I thought the Old Firm game might have swung it,” McNamara said.

“Because my whole thing was, show the kid that you’re going to keep him, show him that he’s not behind six or seven other players.

“When Ben went down to visit Liverpool, Klopp said, ‘Ah Ben, I’ve seen your stuff.’ Straight away he was made to feel really welcome.”

“He’s a Scottish Rooney. That’s what I said to Ange [Postecoglou] at Celtic, I told him I’ve never seen anything like Ben.”

Injuries to Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota have left Klopp short of forward options ahead of the Premier League restart.

The teenager has been an unused substitute in the league, but could be given an opportunity in their absence.

Given Doak has been compared to Rooney, Klopp may hope he could have the same impact when bursting onto the scene.
