‘Never’… 27-year-old claims there’s no chance he’d have left Celtic if he was actually being played

Celtic have had a load of young talents come through the ranks over the past decade or so that have had to leave the club to get first-team football.

Most recently, Ben Doak left Celtic for Liverpool where he has been enjoying some regular football under Jurgen Klopp.

Rocco Vata is another who is also tipped to become a star but is yet to make a proper breakthrough at Celtic.

But it was in 2018 that Celtic allowed another bright young talent in Liam Henderson to leave the club for Italy under Brendan Rodgers.

The 27-year-old left Glasgow for Bari and now plying his trade on loan at Palermo, Henderson opened up on exactly why he decided to swap Lennoxtown for the Stadio San Nicola.

Henderson said [Official Celtic FC podcast], “I always said if I was playing for Celtic every single week it would never have even come into consideration.

“Because for me, there’s no there’s only a handful of clubs that are bigger than Celtic in world football. So if I was playing for Celtic week in, week out obviously it wouldn’t have happened.

“But obviously I had to make the step to better myself.”

Why Liam Henderson had to leave Celtic

Henderson was a player that really excited the Celtic fans. Highly rated at the club, the competition he faced to break into a Celtic side that had just completed an Invincibles Treble was fierce.

Scott Brown, Tom Rogic, Callum McGregor, Olivier Ntcham and Stuart Armstrong were all incredible for Celtic at that period and Henderson had virtually no chance of breaking through.

Having said that, he did manage to make 37 appearances for Celtic under Neil Lennon but the step-up to get into that Celtic side was just too great and Henderson left to join Bari after successful loan spells at Rosenborg and Hibs.

It’s hard to believe that it was almost six years ago that Henderson left Celtic and he, and Doak, are proof that there is life after Paradise if the right move is made.
