'Plenty of energy': Media impressed by £40m attacker Arsenal want to sign after Qatar

Cody Gakpo got the opening goal for the Netherlands as they beat Senegal this evening and Liverpool and Arsenal fans will have been watching closely.

Gakpo was given the start by Louis van Gaal amid a backdrop of rumours linking him with a move away from PSV. As has been widely reported, both Liverpool and Arsenal are known to be keen on signing the forward.

Of course, Gakpo has been in fine form for PSV and he continued that in the opener here in Qatar. He rose above Edouard Mendy to nod home in the second half and looked a threat throughout.

And looking at the couple of reviews of his performance, it seems the media were impressed too. Giving him a 7/10 rating, Dutch news site GetFootballNewsBene seemed impressed with Gakpo.

“Plenty of energy and substance from the PSV Eindhoven player as his header ended up being the main difference in Qatar. He will be frustrated,” GetFootballNewsBene wrote.

Close to home, website 101 Great Goals gave Gakpo a slightly lower rating, conceding he might have been a tad frustrated.

“Came into the game with a big reputation but flattered to deceive on the wing. Was better through the middle and timed his run well to nod past Mendy for the winner,” 101 Great Goals wrote in giving Gakpo a 6/10.

TBR’s View: Gakpo shows enough in Netherlands win

It’s always good for fans of English clubs to see how players they’re keen on get on in the big tournaments and this was a good chance to see Cody Gakpo.

All in all, Gakpo did well. He got the crucial goal and over the first ten yards, displayed a nice turn of pace as well.

It’s clear why Arsenal want him. The Gunners could just do with one more attacking threat. In Gakpo, they might well get their ideal man in January.
