Liverpool are closely monitoring PSV star Cody Gakpo

Football journalist Dean Jones has claimed that Liverpool have been closely monitoring PSV Eindhoven and Netherlands attacker Cody Gakpo ahead of a potential transfer.

The talented Dutchman has been absolutely sensational this season. He has directly contributed to 30 goals (13 goals and 17 assists) in all competitions, which is a better return than Manchester City superstar Erling Haaland.

Arsenal have been heavily linked with a move to sign Gakpo, and it now looks like Liverpool like him too.

Jurgen Klopp’s side sold Sadio Mane to Bayern Munich in the summer, and Liverpool just don’t feel the same without the Senegal international.

The likes of Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota have played out wide on the left flank, and as good as they both are, they haven’t quite had the same impact as Mane did – especially in big games.

Klopp needs to address that at some point in the next two transfer windows, and that’s probably why they are looking at a player like Gakpo, who has proven that he can both, score goals and provide assists.

Jones told GiveMeSport: “They (Liverpool) have watched him and they have monitored him very closely, as closely as most other teams have so far. They just haven’t been linked with him as frequently.

“Now, I think it depends really on how their squad shapes up for the return to action as to whether they will be likely to go for him.”

Gakpo’s contract at PSV runs till the summer of 2026, but it is very likely that he’ll leave the Dutch outfit in 2023.

Gakpo has been on fire this season, and he’ll definitely be on the shortlist of a number of clubs across Europe.

The £40 million-rated man, branded as ‘dangerous‘ by Matt Turner, is in the Dutch World Cup squad as well, and if he has a good tournament in Qatar, he’ll attract even more interest than he already has over the past few months.

A move to Liverpool would make a lot of sense for Gakpo. He’d fit in really well, and if he can replicate the same kind of output in England, Reds fans will stop missing Mane.

It will be interesting to see what will happen with Gakpo, but whoever gets him will benefit massively.
