Liverpool’s superb start to the season has been turned upside down by their almighty collapse in form, having lost their last four Premier League games – but that will still see Mohamed Salah break a record that hasn’t been touched for almost ten years.
Liverpool recorded a series of late winners in the first month of the campaign, notably a 100th-minute winner over Newcastle United and Mohamed Salah’s 95th-minute penalty against Burnley, to take them top of the Premier League heading into the end of September.
However, four losses have since succeeded that, and with results going against them, that has seen Arne Slot’s men go seventh. Already seven points from the top of the table and in desperate need of an upturn in form, Liverpool are struggling.
But on a personal note, Mohamed Salah could still break a record for the best contribution to a single club in Premier League history over Manchester United icon Wayne Rooney.

Mohamed Salah is shortly set to break Wayne Rooney’s incredible Premier League tally
Mohamed Salah joined Liverpool in 2017, just two weeks before Wayne Rooney sealed an emotional exit at Manchester United after his own 13-year spell at Old Trafford.
Rooney was winding down his career, aged 32, whilst Salah was a hungry winger with a point to prove aged just 25.
The Scouse native had departed United with 276 goals and assists in the Premier League after 13 years, winning five Premier League titles, an FA Cup and a Champions League in that time.
It was, and still is, a record in the Premier League, one that has stood the test of time. However, Salah’s consolation goal against Brentford on Saturday has moved him to 275 for Liverpool in the league, within touching distance of Rooney’s tally.
Salah already has four more Premier League goals for Liverpool than Rooney had for United, though he’s five assists behind. But crucially, Salah has done so in 96 fewer games, and he could break that over the weekend.

Mohamed Salah has had a bigger impact for Liverpool than Wayne Rooney did at Man United
Rooney joined United when they were in their pomp under Sir Alex Ferguson. The Red Devils had won eight of the previous 12 Premier League campaigns under their Scottish boss.
While Rooney continued that with five more titles in nine seasons, he did join a group that had the likes of Rio Ferdinand, Cristiano Ronaldo, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Roy Keane to name but a few.
| Competition | Wayne Rooney appearances for Man United | Wayne Rooney goals for Man United |
|---|---|---|
| Premier League | 393 | 183 |
| Champions League | 85 | 30 |
| FA Cup | 40 | 22 |
| Carabao Cup | 20 | 5 |
| Europa League | 10 | 5 |
Salah, meanwhile, had just been a part of a Liverpool side that had finished fourth under Jurgen Klopp – one that had only qualified for the top four in two of the previous eight seasons, and hadn’t won a league title for 27 years. Even if Salah was to leave today, he would depart with two Premier League titles, an FA Cup and a Champions League trophy after Liverpool’s win over Tottenham.
Of course, Rooney won more, but he was surrounded by world-class stars that have gone on to win everything in the game.
Salah has taken Liverpool from Champions League hopefuls to annual title contenders with his goals – and as aforementioned, could break Rooney’s record with 95 games to spare.
There is no doubting who has had the bigger influence on their club – the ‘Egyptian King’ wins this one.
