Mohamed Elneny says he would sign new contract at Arsenal if offered
Mohamed Elneny has told Sky Sports that he would sign a new contract at Arsenal – if the Gunners decide that they want him to stay at the Emirates this summer.
Elneny’s future remains up in the air. As things stand, the Egyptian will be a free agent in just over a month. And for much of the campaign, it appeared inevitable that he would be leaving.
He struggled for game-time for Mikel Arteta’s men. And Fabrizio Romano previously suggested that there were no talks planned over a new contract for the midfielder.
However, the injury to Thomas Partey has opened the door for Elneny to come back into the side in recent weeks. And he has taken his opportunity with both hands. He has been ‘magnificent’ for the Gunners.
His form has led to a debate over whether Elneny should get a new contract at Arsenal. Reports have suggested that Mikel Arteta is now determined to keep Elneny.
And the midfielder has suggested that he would be happy to stay at the Emirates – if offered the chance.
“I’ve said before, if Arsenal want me, it’s my club, my family, but it’s not my decision,” he told Sky Sports. “I have to wait for them to say ‘Mo, we want you’.
“Since the first day I have been here, it has felt like a family. We really work like that here, it’s such a beautiful club.”
Elneny would sign a new Arsenal contract
Much may depend on which players Arsenal are lining up this summer. If they are planning an overhaul of their options in the middle of the park, perhaps the time may be right to let the 29-year-old leave.
He has his limitations. And he has never quite been able to establish himself as a key man with Arsenal.
But as a squad player, he seems like an ideal option to have around. He often does well when called upon. And clearly, Arteta trusts him.
It would surely make sense therefore, if Elneny was still at Arsenal next season.
