Southgate called up three Arsenal players to the England squad for the World Cup in Qatar – Ramsdale, Bukayo Saka and Ben White.

Saka is the only one who is expected to feature in every game, but White and Ramsdale have both been excellent for Arsenal since the start of this season as well.

Ramsdale is an exceptional goalkeeper. His distribution is up there with the best in the Premier League, and he has shown on multiple occasions since the start of last season that he’s a brilliant shot-stopper as well.

The 24-year-old took to Instagram to celebrate his first-ever World Cup call-up yesterday. He claimed that it’s a dream come true, and his teammates Mohamed Elneny and Matt Turner are absolutely delighted for him.

The American goalkeeper commented ‘Wow’ under his Instagram post, while Elneny went a step further and claimed that Ramsdale is the “number one”.

“Good luck bro! You are number one,” he wrote on Instagram. Reiss Nelson also commented: “My guy!”

TBR View:

Ramsdale, branded as an ‘outstanding’ goalkeeper by Mikel Arteta, has definitely done enough at Arsenal to be in contention for England’s number-one spot, but it’s extremely unlikely that Southgate will use him.

Everton’s Jordon Pickford is the England boss’ preferred option, while we also saw Newcastle United star Nick Pope ahead of the Gunners goalkeeper in the last international break.

That is a shame for Ramsdale, but he shouldn’t be too fussed. He’s still only 24, which is extremely young for a goalkeeper, and if he keeps performing at the highest level, he will get there one day.

Arsenal take on Wolves tomorrow in the final Premier League game before the World Cup. Whether an impressive performance from Ramsdale there will change Southgate’s mind remains to be seen.
