Mikel Arteta plays down chances of a big January spend

Mikel Arteta has come into the Arsenal job at a point of transition. Some players need to be offloaded and new additions are needed. However, rushing to do all of this in one January window will not work.

The Gunners have been linked with Boubakary Soumare in recent days among other names and it would be easy for fans to expect big things from Arteta in his first window as Arsenal manager.

However, the new boss was keen to play down the chances of a January overhaul. As reported on the club website, he said: ”I’m not expecting big things. I’m expecting big things from the players I have at the moment, the players that are recovering from injuries.

”That’s the biggest expectations from my side, they’re there. If we can find something to help us go through the season in a more balanced way in certain areas, and is helpful, we’ll look at the options.”

Arteta was keen to focus on the players currently available to him in the Arsenal squad. When asked if they will still be considering making moves, he added: ”Yeah, we always have to be looking because obviously we have some bad injuries for players who are going to be out for a long time. We have to see if we can find options there.”

Arteta will no doubt seek additions if the right options are available. The Gunners are looking vulnerable in midfield and at the back and could do with some new faces.
