Arsenal edged into the fourth round of the FA Cup on Monday night with a 1-0 victory over Leeds United.
The Gunners were fortunate to progress. Reiss Nelson’s goal set up a tie with Bournemouth, despite the Championship outfit dominating for large parts.
A lack of quality was highlighted once again during a dull first period and boss Mikel Arteta will surely look to address that.
The transfer window is now open and although wholesale changes are unlikely, one or two incomings wouldn’t be unwelcome.
One man who was once again erratic against Leeds was Granit Xhaka. Arteta has handed him a reprieve in recent weeks, but his clumsiness could cost Arsenal in the long-term.
Some real quality in the middle of the park would be ideal. Matteo Guendouzi and Lucas Torreira have potential but another option would be nice.
Arsenal have been linked with Boubakary Soumare and he would represent a quality addition.
Sky Sports believe the Gunners to be in the race for his signature alongside Manchester United, Chelsea and Real Madrid.
Soumare won’t come cheap. The Sun claims his value is around £50 million but he could prove to be worth every single penny.
The 20-year-old typically operates as a defensive midfielder and looks a really bright prospect. He can tackle, pass and boasts a great engine.
Arsenal have struggled to find a player over the years who fits the mould of the legendary Patrick Vieira who was a driving force of the famous invincibles team.
Soumare is very similar in stature to his compatriot and boasts similar attributes from the middle of the park.
Of course, the man with four under-21 caps for France would have some way to go to emulate the Gunners great, but the similarities are striking.
Arsenal have been too soft and too lackadaisical for far too long in midfield and landing the Lille man would be a great starting point for Arteta.
