Mikel Arteta calls up 17-year-old wonderkid to Dubai training camp, he’s yet to make Arsenal debut

Arsenal’s first team are jetting off to Dubai today as their Premier League preparations step up another level.

Mikel Arteta’s squad will have enjoyed some well-earned time off after a fantastic start to the season.

The Gunners took part in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Watford yesterday, losing 4-2 to the Championship side.

Arteta certainly didn’t have his first-choice team available, with many of Arsenal’s stars still at the World Cup.

One player whose time at the World Cup has ended is forward Gabriel Jesus.

He left Brazil’s squad after picking up an injury to his right knee, which will be a bitter blow to Arteta and Brazil coach Tite.

A report from sporttv, via Football London, suggests Jesus could be out for as long as three months.

Meanwhile, Arteta has called up a number of young players to join the rest of the first team squad in Dubai.

Already, the likes of Myles Lewis-Skelly and Matt Smith have joined the first team to make up the numbers.

And judging by posts on social media, Arteta has called up young defender Lino Sousa to join the first team.

Arteta gives Sousa training camp call up

Sousa’s under-21s teammate Taylor Foran took to Instagram to share a picture of himself and Sousa on a plane.

The caption was simply an aeroplane emoji next to a flag of the United Arab Emirates.

The 17-year-old left-back has been involved with the first team already this season.

Arteta called Sousa up to join first team training ahead of their match against Wolves.

He’s previously been mentored by Oleksandr Zinchenko in training as Arteta keeps a close eye on his development.

Although Sousa hasn’t made his competitive first-team debut yet, he was on the bench against Brentford in the Premier League.

Instead, he saw 15-year-old teammate Ethan Nwaneri make his record-breaking bow.

Sousa now has three friendlies against Lyon, AC Milan and Juventus to build on his cameo against Watford yesterday.

Regardless of if or how Sousa plays, the faith shown by Arteta to call him up is a great sign for the teenager.
