Micky van de Ven says 25-year-old Tottenham teammate is already ‘world-class’

Micky van de Ven believes that Cristian Romero is already world-class as he opened up on how the Argentinian has helped him since his move to Tottenham Hotspur last summer.

Micky van de Ven has been a revelation since arriving in the Premier League. It appeared to be a gamble for Spurs to spend so much on the young Dutchman. However, the move has proved to be an inspired one.

Crucially, the arrival of van de Ven has got the best out of Cristian Romero, too. Romero would have likely left the club had Antonio Conte stayed beyond last season. And it seemed that some Tottenham fans had lost their patience with the centre-back – particularly as he helped his country win the World Cup midway through the last campaign.

But Romero has arguably been back to something like his best this season. And speaking to Optus Sport, van de Ven shared how much he is relishing the opportunity to play alongside the defender at the heart of the Tottenham backline.

“For me, Romero is world-class. Of course, as you say, he won the world championship. But how you see him on the pitch, he’s a leader,” he said.

“He wants to take the team and he’s always 100 percent. Sometimes people see that he’s a bit too aggressive. He’s top-class on the ball and without the ball, defending. I can promise you this guy is not scared of anyone. He keeps going every game. And from the start, he was helping me.”

Argentinian back to his best

Tottenham fans knew what a special player Romero could be for them after his first season. He was superb while on loan. And it looked to be a massive coup.

Last year perhaps provided more of an indication as to why Atalanta were prepared to sell him immediately.

But being promoted to co-vice-captain appears to have brought the best out of Romero again. And given that he is the senior partner at 25, there is little reason why Tottenham’s centre-back partnership cannot continue to get better and better.
