Michail Antonio admits he made mistake after being subbed off vs Nottingham Forest

West Ham United striker Michail Antonio has now been discussing a mistake he made during his visit to old club Nottingham Forest last weekend.

It seemed pretty apt that Antonio’s long-awaited injury return came at the City Ground, having not played since November owing to a knee injury.

David Moyes would have surely been delighted to see the return of a recognised striker for West Ham too, especially given the increased speculation surrounding his job.

It wasn’t too long ago that Michael Carrick was being linked with the managerial gig in East London, and form under Moyes has been pretty woeful since.

That being said, Antonio’s return didn’t quite have the desired effect against Forest, with West Ham suffering a 2-0 defeat.

And having been subbed in the 75th minute, Antonio admitted that he made a big mistake when walking off the pitch.

Speaking on the ‘Footballer’s Football Podcast’ with Tom Cairney, Antonio admitted that he accidentally walked off the pitch in the same direction he would have done in his Forest days.

Despite only playing for Forest on 54 occasions, in comparison to his 291 West Ham apps, it almost seemed as if Antonio almost forgot which set of fans were his when subbed.

He said: “When I got subbed off I got a standing ovation and I’m not going to lie, as I was doing it, because I walked off the pitch near the halfway line, I started walking round to my left and I was like I should have went right as that’s where the West Ham fans were but it was a natural direction for me to walk round.

“And what saved me was that when [Emerson] walked off he walked in the exact direction I did, so I was like I’m not going to get no flak for that because Eme did that exact same thing I did!”

Of course, West Ham fans will probably be happy to forgive Antonio on this occasion, fans who will have just been happy to see him return at Forest.

And with a view to this weekend, David Moyes now faces a crucial visit from Brentford on Monday night.

Moreover, despite having Antonio back, it seems as if Moyes would also like to welcome a ‘brilliant’ new striker to East London in the summer.
