Michael Essien sends nine-word Instagram message to Newcastle star Christian Atsu, as exit confirmed

Christian Atsu has confirmed to Newcastle supporters that he has left the club, with his contract expiring in June. Ghana winger Atsu has posted an emotional message on Instagram, prompting reaction from Premier League icon Michael Essien.

Atsu, 29, ends a five-year stint on Tyneside that initially saw him join on loan from Chelsea under Rafa Benitez. That loan was made permanent following promotion, and he has since gone on to play 121 times for the Toon. However, he managed just one outing in 2020-21.

Indeed, the 65-time Ghana international was seen more often playing for the club’s reserves in Premier League 2. Now, he has confirmed his exit with an emotional message to the club’s supporters. Atsu applauded them for making Newcastle feel like home.

It was claimed earlier last season that Atsu’s wages were preventing him from finding a new club. Now, he will be looking for a new team.

Is Atsu departure from Newcastle a fair one, after Essien comment?

For Steve Bruce to afford the ex-Chelsea and Everton man just one appearance all season is harsh. But the form of Allan Saint-Maximin, combined with the use of Ryan Fraser, Jacob Murphy and others has pushed him down the pecking order and inevitably, keeping him was nonsensical.

Given that his contract is about to expire, it makes utter sense for Newcastle to allow him to become a free agent. Now, Atsu can find a new club and it might be that he leaves these shores in order to do so. Essien, a teammate of Atsu at Chelsea and Ghana, responded to his post with a nine-word message.
