Newcastle United are looking to offload Christian Atsu before Friday’s EFL deadline but are now accepting that they’ll need to cover some of his wages if they are to sort a deal.

Atsu has fallen well down the pecking order at St James’ Park after initially showing some promise. The likes of Nottingham Forest and Watford are said to be keen on the winger, who earns a reported £30k-a-week, per Spotrac.

The 28-year-old Ghana man has endured a frustrating career in the main. Having spent nearly all his time at Chelsea out on loan, Atsu is now once again looking for a new loan move. He has, however, managed to make over 70 appearances in his Magpies career.

The EFL deadline is set to end this week, meaning both Watford and Forest will need to act swiftly to secure a deal for Atsu.

A good player for the Championship – TBR View

Atsu is a massive talent and on his day he can cause the best defenders problems with his pace and skills in wide areas.

For a Championship team, he would prove a solid addition, even though it will just be a loan deal initially. He needs to play football and, likewise, Newcastle need to save some money.

Watford would appear the move likely destination it seems. They’ll have more scope to pay a loan fee and the wages than Forest you would think, given they’ve only just been relegated.
