Michael Dawson shares why Arne Slot was ‘so angry’ on the touchline in Crystal Palace loss

Arne Slot was seen absolutely furious on the touchline during Liverpool’s 2-1 loss against Crystal Palace.

The Dutchman saw his unbeaten record ended by the only other undefeated side in the Premier League as Ismaila Sarr continued his goalscoring streak against the Reds.

Sarr has made a habit of scoring against Liverpool, and the Senegalese international added to his goal in the Community Shield to score the opener at Selhurst Park.

However, Federico Chiesa repeated his feat against Bournemouth on the opening day and scored what looked like an 87th-minute equaliser until Eddie Nketiah snatched the three points for Palace with virtually the last kick of the game.

Saturday’s clash was not without controversy, and ex-Tottenham man Michael Dawson has explained what made the Liverpool boss so angry during the first half.

Arne Slot was fuming with the corner that led to Ismaila Sarr’s goal

Speaking live on Sky Sports, Dawson said Slot couldn’t contain his anger as he believed the corner that led to Palace’s goal was incorrectly awarded.

“Arne Slot got booked for leaving the technical area. There was a corner given, and it should have been a goal kick.

“It was given as a corner and ended up as a goal. That is why he was so angry.”

Liverpool reporter for The Athletic, Gregg Evans also confirmed via X that the ball last touched Tyrick Mitchell, rather than Conor Bradley, and therefore the decision should have been to give the Reds a goal kick.

Darren Bent said Liverpool look like champions heading into the clash; however, Crystal Palace dominated throughout the 90 minutes in South London.

The visitors could not live with Palace, most notably, Ibrahima Konate – the Frenchman rediscovered his best form against Everton, but produced a performance reminiscent of his underwhelming displays seen in the opening two matches of the campaign.

Slot introduced Cody Gakpo for the second half in place of Bradley to give Liverpool another attacking threat, and while this did result in more chances, ultimately, it wasn’t enough to save the champions from their first defeat of the season.

Arne Slot must go back to the drawing board at Liverpool

Indeed, the Reds maintained a perfect record across all competitions heading into the clash, but the results have papered over the cracks of the concerning performances.

Liverpool have now scored eight goals in the final ten minutes of matches this season, often relying on those goals to decide games, which is hardly a sustainable long-term method.

The Reds were always bound to drop points if the displays did not prove up to standard, and the side certainly met their match at Selhurst Park.

It is clear that something is not working, and Slot must soon find the right balance in his starting eleven, or this result could be a telltale sign of what is to come.
