'A big decision': Michael Carrick says 'perfect' player Tottenham want has one big motivation to impress Conte
Tottenham are interested in bringing Jesse Lingard to north London and former midfielder, Michael Carrick, has been speaking about the potential move.
Lingard has once again been mentioned as a potential signing for Spurs this week. Reports claim the club are back in for Lingard, a year or so on from when Jose Mourinho first looked at signing Lingard himself. West Ham are also still keen on signing him, although there’s been no decision from Lingard’s side just yet.
And according to Michael Carrick, the World Cup being around the corner will have a big bearing on where Lingard decides his next career move will be.
“World Cup year is a big year for many,” he told Sky Sports News.
“The World Cup comes off the back of playing well for your club, so for Jesse it’s a big decision to get the right club to play for to enjoy his football and to get back to playing well again. Hopefully he can do that.”
Lauded as being ‘perfect‘ for a 4-2-2-2 formation when Leeds were said to be interested, Lingard shone in a loan spell with West Ham before stalling once again back at Old Trafford.
TBR’s View: Lingard Might Not Get The Games He Needs At Tottenham
If Carrick’s call here is right and Lingard is looking to the World Cup, then maybe moving to Tottenham won’t be the smartest move he can make.
Of course, Champions League football is on offer with Antonio Conte’s side, as is the chance to work for Conte himself, who has a track record of getting the best from players.
However, the big question would be where does Lingard fit into this Spurs XI? He’s not going to displace the attacking players, so could become a squad player. And with Qatar around the corner, that’s not what he wants at all.
