Micah Richards lauds Trent Alexander-Arnold after Liverpool win
Micah Richards has told Gareth Southgate that he must take Trent Alexander-Arnold this summer, insisting on Match of the Day 2 that the Liverpool star has everything following his latest display.
Jurgen Klopp’s men picked up the most incredible win against West Brom on Sunday. Alisson got the winner with an outstanding header from a stoppage-time corner.
Understandably, the goalkeeper will take many of the headlines. But there were also a number of superb performances from his teammates at the Hawthorns as the Reds kept their top four hopes alive.
Alexander-Arnold was one of those who could have done little more against the Baggies. It was his corner that Alisson headed home. And he looked to be Liverpool’s most creative player throughout the contest.
And Richards insisted that there is now no way that Southgate can justify leaving him out of his England squad for the European Championships.
“Regardless of if he’s in bad form, he’s still got to go to the Euro’s. And he’s showed, he’s got his Player of the Month award. And he’s just got everything to his game,” he told Match of the Day 2.
“The thing is now you’ve got 26 players, he has to go, even if he has to go in that midfield role. For someone of that quality, look at his delivery of the ball, set-pieces.”
From an international perspective, Alexander-Arnold certainly looks to be finding form at the perfect time.
Many Liverpool supporters felt that he was man of the match at Old Trafford earlier in the week. And the 22-year-old – who earns £75,000-a-week, according to Spotrac – was extremely impressive at West Brom.
Of course, his doubters will probably point to the most recent opposition as a reason to not give him the full credit he deserves.
But Southgate is surely now asking for trouble if he is overlooked this summer.
