Micah Richards has told The Monday Night Club that Cristian Romero shouting in Harry Maguire’s face after his own goal in Tottenham Hotspur’s defeat to Manchester United was one of the most disrespectful things the Spurs centre-back could have done.
Tottenham stayed true to form at Old Trafford. They went into the contest still awaiting their first back-to-back victories of 2022. And they have not drawn a single game in that time either.

Their previous result was a 5-0 thrashing of Everton. So supporters may have feared the worst. However, with 18 minutes remaining, the game was very much in the balance.
Tottenham had been 2-1 down when Maguire put the ball into his own net to level things up. Perhaps surprisingly, that prompted Romero to go straight to the Manchester United defender and celebrate right in his face.

Unfortunately for Spurs, Romero was the one with egg on his face ultimately as the home side then scored the winner.
Richards went on to suggest that he could understand that reaction a little more if Romero was facing off against an Antonio Rudiger, who loves to be a nuisance on the pitch.
However, he was extremely critical of the Tottenham star for deciding to mock Maguire in that moment.
“No, no, no. It’s going off in the tunnel afterwards. It’s one of the most disrespectful things you could do on the pitch,” he told The Monday Night Club.
“And Romero has been in such good form of late, he doesn’t need to do that nonsense.
“What made it worse is Harry Maguire has been going through such a bad time, so to get an own goal you know what he’s going through.
“It’s getting heated in the tunnel. I’m not condoning violence, but yes.”
Tottenham may be wary of trying to get Romero to change his style
Romero has not been perfect in the last few games. And there are aspects of his game that Spurs fans may not mind seeing disappearing in the future.
He made a wild challenge in the win over Everton that seemed completely unnecessary. It was one of the most obvious yellow cards you will see. And there seemed to be little reason for it.
And occasionally, his inexperience seems to have been exposed when Tottenham are marking at set-pieces.
However, Tottenham may be wary of attempting to get Romero to modify his game. He has been colossal at times this season. And he looks to have the potential to become an incredible defender.
Spurs may not want to risk taking his fire away from him.
