'This guy': Kieran Trippier blown away by 25-year-old Newcastle player in training
Newcastle United defender Kieran Trippier has named Joelinton as the Magpies trainer who’s surprised him the most in training.
The 25-year-old is Newcastle United’s record signing, joining for a reported £40million in July 2019.
However, Joelinton struggled for quite a while at St James’ Park.
Previously deployed largely up front or on the left wing at Newcastle, the Brazilian often looked lost.
But now, with Newcastle boss Eddie Howe deploying him in attacking midfield, Joelinton is thriving.
The Brazilian continued his renaissance with another fine performance last time out.
Joelinton helped Newcastle pick up a 1-1 draw against West Ham last Saturday.
On Thursday, Trippier held a Q&A on his Instagram stories.
And when he was asked which Newcastle player caught him by surprise in training, Trippier went for Joelinton.
Howe has not only done well to give Newcastle a fighting chance of surviving in the Premier League, but he’s getting the best out of Joelinton.
Indeed, Magpies teammate Callum Wilson has deemed him their player of the season so far.
“He’s a joke!” Wilson said on the BBC’s Footballer’s Football Podcast.
“At the minute, he’s our player of the season, the way Eddie’s transformed him.
“He’s been outstanding the last eight weeks. He looks a totally different player.
“He was playing out wide in Germany and now he’s inside a little bit more.
“He’s unreal, he’s unplayable. And he’s still so young as well. Now he should get the plaudits he deserves.
“What a player.”
