Liverpool face Watford in the Premier League at lunchtime tomorrow and Paul Merson believes James Milner will get the nod over Joe Gomez at right-back.

The international break is almost over and we’re on the verge of the start of the business end of the season. Liverpool already have a trophy in the bank but the Reds are looking to add three more in the next two months.

The first test is against Watford tomorrow and it will be interesting to see who Jurgen Klopp will start. Trent Alexander-Arnold’s injury means there’s a decision to make at right-back.

Milner and Gomez are both quality options to have but who will Klopp go with?

Paul Merson: James Milner will start ahead of Joe Gomez in Liverpool v Watford

The Athletic revealed recently that Gomez, who impressed in the FA Cup against Nottingham Forest, is likely to keep his place until Alexander-Arnold returns.

Merson, however, believes Klopp will go with Milner because the £140,000-a-week Liverpool man rarely ever disappoints when called upon.

He wrote in his column on Sportskeeda: “With Trent Alexander-Arnold missing due to injury, Jurgen Klopp might turn to Joe Gomez or James Milner to deputize at right-back.

“I think he’ll go with the latter because when Milner plays, he hardly ever disappoints.”

Gomez has had a tough time at Liverpool following his horrible injury last year. He has fallen down the pecking order and has barely played this term as a result.

The 24-year-old, branded as ‘incredible‘ by Klopp, has played 15 times in all competitions this season and most of his appearances have come at right-back, which is not his natural position.

However, as he showed against Forest in the Cup before the break, he is more than capable of doing a job in Alexander-Arnold’s position, even though he’s not as attack-minded as Trent is.

It will be interesting to see who Klopp will go with at right-back when Watford come to Liverpool tomorrow.
