‘Mega, mega money’… Tottenham would now have to break club-record to sign 19-goal striker

Journalist Mike McGrath has shared what he has been told about the price it will take to sign Santiago Gimenez with Tottenham Hotspur very interested in the striker.

Santiago Gimenez has been one of the most impressive forwards in Europe this season. The Mexico international has scored 19 goals in 17 Eredivisie games this term.

Unsurprisingly, he is attracting a lot of interest. Tottenham are very keen on Gimenez. But it is hard to see Spurs making a big-money move for a striker in the January transfer window, having already welcomed two signings, including Timo Werner, who can play across the forward line.

Tottenham need club-record amount to sign Santiago Gimenez

Certainly, Gimenez will be one name to keep an eye on heading into the summer.

But speaking on the Last Word on Spurs podcast, McGrath suggested that Tottenham are going to have to be prepared to break their club-record to sign the 22-year-old, with Feyenoord looking for at least £69 million.

“We’ve reported at the Telegraph, there’s Gimenez at Feyenoord. Many, many other clubs have watched him and people are seeing what kind of price Feyenoord are going to ask for for him. You’re hearing mega, mega money that it’s going to take, €80m plus. He’s highly regarded,” he said.

Spurs may be wary after previous striker deal

Of course, the concern for Tottenham will be whether Gimenez is able to be as prolific in the Premier League. He has obviously been outstanding, but some players have struggled to take that form out of the Eredivisie.

Spurs themselves, know that better than most. Vincent Janssen arrived off the back of a campaign in which he scored 27 goals in the Dutch top-flight. But he barely managed 27 league appearances for Tottenham before his departure.

Admittedly, Janssen would probably find it a bit easier now with Harry Kane no longer at the club. But he still struggled to take his opportunities when they came along.

Someone will take a gamble on Gimenez, despite his asking price. And there will be plenty of Tottenham fans hoping that they are the ones who do roll the dice.
