Ally McCoist has jokingly labelled Steven Gerrard “yesterday’s news”.

The renowned funny man made his cheeky dig at the former Ibrox boss on Thursday morning’s Talksport.

Speaking with Alan Brazil and Gabby Agbonlahor, the trio discussed the recent Aston Villa loan signing of Philippe Coutinho.

McCoist was unconvinced by the signing, despite Gerrard already having a relationship with the player, being former Liverpool teammates.

Why The 2021 African Cup of Nations Is So Controversial

McCoist said: “I have a question mark over Coutinho.

“I think he is an excellent player, sorry, I think he was an excellent player, I still think there is talent there, I just hope, from Villa’s point of view, that Steven can get the best out of them.”

Brazil, a former Celtic youth player who often has Old Firm banter with McCoist mocked the opinion.

He suggested McCoist was only critical of Gerrard’s signings because of his departure from Rangers.

McCoist jokingly responded, as far as he was concerned “The man is fish and chip paper, he’s yesterday’s news, we’ve moved on, we’re part of Gio’s army.”

Gio’s start to life at Rangers

Giovanni Van Bronckhorst is undefeated in his nine games in charge.

He has overseen wins in all seven league games, ensuring Rangers have a six-point gap at the top of the table.

McCoist’s opinion on Gerrard to Villa

McCoist had previously claimed Villa and Gerrard were both taking a gamble, as he was “untried and tested in the Premier League.”

However, Gerrard has made an impressive start at his new club.

He has recorded four wins in his first nine games.

Four of those defeats have come against “top six” sides.

A 3-1 defeat to Chelsea has been accompanied by three narrow defeats to Man Utd, Liverpool, and Man City.

Meanwhile, Gerrard remains active in the transfer window as he looks to bolster his ranks for the remainder of the season.
