Matt Glennon makes Lewis O'Brien claim amid Leeds links

Matt Glennon has told the Sunday Mirror (22/8; page 64) that Lewis O’Brien is ready to make the step up as he suggested that the midfielder would be suited to a team like Leeds United.

O’Brien looks to be the Whites’ key target in the final days of the transfer window.

Marcelo Bielsa has suggested this week that new signings are unlikely. But reports suggest that they are looking at a potential £5 million move for O’Brien that could rise to £8 million.

It remains to be seen if Leeds can get a deal done. But Glennon – who made more than 120 appearances for Huddersfield in his playing days and works with BBC Radio Leeds covering the Terriers – believes that Leeds would benefit if they did bring him to Elland Road.

“I feel Lewis is ready to make the step up because he’s proved himself a very good player,” he told the Sunday Mirror (22/8; page 64).

“Lewis is one of those players who never stops and that’s a great attribute to have, especially in a team like Leeds who play in a high press.”

O’Brien deal could be a shrewd piece of business from Leeds

It does seem that Leeds need further reinforcements in the middle of the park.

Stuart Dallas and Mateusz Klich were excellent on Saturday as the Whites drew with Everton. But they do not have many options for that number eight role.

O’Brien has impressed in the Championship for a couple of years now. It was his assist that led to the goal that confirmed Leeds’s promotion back in 2020.

Bielsa has shown what he can do with players who show promise in the second tier.

So if Leeds do end up getting a deal across the line, it could really prove to be a shrewd piece of business.
