Martin Zubimendi yet to decide on future despite Arsenal claims

Journalist Ben Jacobs has shared whether he believes Arsenal have already agreed terms with Martin Zubimendi ahead of the summer transfer window.

Martin Zubimendi has been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal over the last 12 months. In fact, there were claims that Zubimendi had turned down a move when Arsenal wanted to trigger his £51.3 million release clause in the previous January window.

It appears that the 24-year-old remains on the Gunners’ radar.

Martin Zubimendi has no agreement with Arsenal

Zubimendi is set to stay with Real Sociedad in January unless something crazy happens. But there had been reports that he was closing in on agreeing to a move to the Emirates in the summer.

However, speaking on The Football Terrace, Jacobs suggested that Zubimendi has not agreed anything and is unlikely to make a decision on his long-term future anytime soon.

“The Arsenal interest hasn’t gone away, but there’s also nothing pre-agreed to my knowledge. And with Douglas Luiz, it’s a similar situation, only in the sense that Aston Villa are flying so high at the moment that it’s going to be very difficult to prise him away as well,” he said.

“I’d expect Arsenal to try for Zubimendi in the summer. But I am told pretty categorically that there’s nothing that has been pre-agreed at this stage.”

Summer move could be yet another excellent piece of business

Arsenal have been very good at pushing through moves for their long-term targets in the past. So you would imagine that they will have Zubimendi at the centre of their plans for the summer.

It does appear that they need reinforcements in midfield. Thomas Partey continues to struggle with injury. Meanwhile, Jorginho is approaching the twilight of his career at the highest level.

Zubimendi on the other hand, has the chance to improve considerably in the future. And there is the potential for a £51.3 million spend to prove to be a really good piece of business.

But clearly, there is plenty of work to be done before the Spaniard decides to make the move to the Emirates at the end of the season.

His future, for now, remains in the balance.
