Martin Keown lauds Aaron Ramsdale as Arsenal beat Burnley
Martin Keown has told Match of the Day that he has been really happy with Aaron Ramsdale after Arsenal beat Burnley, admitting that he questioned the club’s decision to sign the goalkeeper.
Ramsdale made his second league start on Saturday after keeping a clean sheet against Norwich.
A trip to Turf Moor promised to be a more daunting task for the Englishman. Sean Dyche’s side have caused problems for a couple of their opponents this term.
And they certainly asked questions of the Arsenal defence on Saturday. But the Gunners went on to keep an impressive clean sheet on their way to a 1-0 victory.
Ramsdale was excellent. He claimed a number of the balls sent into the box. And he also produced several saves when called upon.
And following the win, Keown suggested that he has already gone some way to silencing his critics with his performances.
“Ramsdale, really strong, 23 years of age, I questioned the purchase,” he told Match of the Day. “But I’ve been really happy with what he’s done. 35 crosses were coming into that box today.”
Ramsdale well on his way to becoming Arsenal number one amid Keown praise
Bernd Leno arguably did little wrong before he lost his place ahead of the game against Norwich. In fact, some felt that he was one of the only players who could hold his head high against Manchester City before the international break.
So Ramsdale’s position does arguably have a question mark hanging over it for the time-being.
But if his display against Burnley is a sign of what is to come, it may not be too long before any debate is put to bed.
Keown was not the only one surprised that Arsenal parted with a large sum to sign Ramsdale in the summer. It appeared that he was set to be a backup for this campaign.
But there is no doubt that he is off to a very promising start as he looks to prove a real point to his doubters.
