Manchester United loanee Marcus Rashford has high praise for a former Red Devils boss with his latest comments.

Rashford is now a Barcelona player, with the English winger heading to sunny Spain for the season, linking up with a plethora of vast European talent at the Spotify Camp Nou.

Rashford’s surroundings are a little different from those of Aston Villa and Manchester United, and that includes the manager he’s working with, Hansi Flick.

The German is notorious for his no-nonsense nature, which gets results. Just like one of his former coaches at the Red Devils.

Marcus Rashford on Jose Mourinho

Speaking with Gary Lineker on The Rest is Football, Rashford went through old Manchester United managers he’s had, and in terms of names, he mentioned having a positive effect on him; the two he didn’t mention were Ruben Amorim and Erik ten Hag.

That said – he had extremely high praise for one – Jose Mourinho.

Gary Lineker asks: “What about the managers you’ve played for? Who’s been the most influential on you?”

Rashford: “Influential? I’d probably say [Louis] Van Gaal, Jose [Mourinho], and Ole [Gunnar Solskjær]. I’ve had so many different managers, so it’s impossible to compare them all. But when you are a developing player, like at a young age, up until Jose, I’d never had a manager so fixated on winning before him.

Lineker: “Van Gaal wasn’t fixated on winning?”

Rashford: “He was fixated on winning, but he wanted to play a beautiful style of football. Jose doesn’t care – if you win, you win. You move on to the next game. At the beginning, I was angry all the time. But because we’ve won, and he’s just a winner, you start to understand him.

“He doesn’t bring up the points that were missing from the last game if we’ve won, but when we lose, he points them out. After a few months, I started to respect that approach, and I reaped the rewards with him as a coach.”

Jose Mourinho is really the “special one”

Jose is a bit of an enigma in the footballing world, but he always receives glowing reviews from his players and former players, including Rashford. That said, the feeling was mutual.

As United boss, he defended the Englishman amid a sea of criticism.

“Marcus Rashford is not [Liverpool striker] Dominic Solanke. He’s not [Chelsea midfielder] Ruben Loftus-Cheek. He’s not [Everton forward] Dominic Calvert-Lewin,” said Mourinho.

“He’s Marcus Rashford, Manchester United player, with an incredible number of appearances and an incredible number of minutes played at the highest level in the best possible competitions.”

Rashford now has a point to prove in Spain – can Flick get what Mourinho got out of him at Manchester United?
