Report: Guardiola now thinks he can sign 'amazing' Liverpool target, days after completing Haaland deal

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola will push to sign Leeds United midfielder and Liverpool target, Kalvin Phillips, after signing Erling Haaland.

Phillips is a man in-demand this summer and is coming under increasing scrutiny regarding his future with Leeds. Despite his obvious love for the club, England’s two top clubs are keen on him. Liverpool are keen on landing Phillips after missing out on Aurelien Tchouameni. Meanwhile, City have been mentioned as a possible destination for the Leeds ace as well.

And according to a report from The Times tonight, City are set to press on with their attempts to lure Phillips.

The Times reports how City would like to sign Phillips next and want him in place before they jet off abroad for pre-season friendlies in July. That would mean getting a deal done within the next three weeks, and putting up the sort of money – believed to be around £60m – that Leeds will accept.

For Phillips, it’s a huge decision in his career. He is a regular fixture in Leeds’ starting XI and with a World Cup around the corner, he must decide whether a move to City is right at this very moment.

TBR’s View: Phillips Can’t Turn Down City…Or Liverpool Either

Leeds fans wouldn’t be able to get angry at Kalvin Phillips if he does go to one of City or Liverpool. Both clubs are exceptional and it would take a big call to say no to either.

Of course, the ‘amazing‘ Phillips loves his hometown club, and that will count for something. But on the flip side, money and fighting to win trophies will also appeal to Phillips. As will the chance to work with Guardiola or Klopp.

Ultimately, this is a case of Leeds getting the right fee. It’s looking like Phillips will go, with City the more likely destination, taking everything into account.
