Liverpool plan to target Kalvin Phillips after missing out on Aurelien Tchouameni, according to a report from the Sunday Mirror (5/6; page 73).

Tchouameni looks set to disappoint the Reds. Reports claimed that he had actually agreed personal terms with Jurgen Klopp’s side ahead of a potential move. However, he is now set to join Real Madrid in a £70 million deal.

Liverpool have wasted little time finding an alternative target. And according to the Sunday Mirror (5/6; page 73), Phillips is on their radar.

Manchester City want the England international. But the Reds are also admirers of the Leeds United talisman. And they may now try their luck with the 26-year-old yet to agree a new contract at Elland Road.

Liverpool would need to pay £60 million to sign Phillips. So it may not be easy to lure him away from Leeds. But clearly, he would struggle not to seriously considering joining either City or Liverpool in this window.

Phillips could be a fantastic signing for the Reds. He works incredibly hard in the middle of the park. And there is a sense that he is yet to reach his ceiling, having seen his career transformed by Marcelo Bielsa.

Leeds certainly missed him while he was absent for large parts of this past campaign. And they saw the best of him against Brentford on the final day.

Jesse Marsch’s decision to play Sam Greenwood in midfield seemed to give Phillips more space to pull the strings. And he did exactly that as Leeds picked up a vital win.

Jose Mourinho previously labelled Phillips an ‘amazing‘ player. It now appears that he has the Premier League’s two best teams fighting over him.
