Manchester City star comments on future, amid reported Arsenal talks

Manchester City star Riyad Mahrez has told fans that he is desperate to continue playing for Pep Guardiola’s side, despite reports of Arsenal making an enquiry. The winger was excellent for City last season, but has entered the final two years of his contract. However, he sees his future at City.

Mahrez, 30, had a hand in 23 goals during 48 appearances in all competitions for City last season. The Algeria skipper also scored three times in two semi-final ties against Paris Saint-Germain to send City into the final. He remains incredibly important to City, but his future is a doubt.

With City spending big on the likes of Harry Kane and Jack Grealish this summer, the likes of Mahrez – who has entered his thirties – are likely to be under threat. Eurosport said in June that Arsenal had made an enquiry. But Mahrez has given an update on his future, stating he wants to stay at City.

“What if I want to go higher? I do not see what is higher [than Man City] To try another championship [elsewhere]? No. I really love England, English football is wonderful. I don’t want to leave. I still have goals to pursue here,” £120k-a-week (Spotrac) Mahrez told Oui Hustle, as per The Mirror.

Is Mahrez right to stay at City – amid Arsenal interest?

Mahrez is a top, top player – one that should be at the top of the division, in the Champions League. But sometimes, it is good to jump ship when things are good – rather than wait another season. Struggling for game time over the next 12 months, he may fail to get a big contract at Arsenal.

While he should be praised for his ambition and drive to stay at City, even with the possible addition of Grealish – Mahrez should consider a move. But not to Arsenal. A club that are at City’s level, but need a winger. With Angel Di Maria 34 in February, could he be the Argentine’s replacement at PSG?
