‘Made the difference’: National media rave about £45m Arsenal target after World Cup performance

With the World Cup group stages now over, the pressure is starting to build on the remaining teams.

Arsenal fans will have plenty of their stars to cheer on, with their England contingent getting ready to play this evening.

However, one Arsenal transfer target has already guided his side through to the quarter-finals.

A report from The Athletic in October suggests that Arsenal are chasing a deal for Netherlands forward Cody Gakpo.

Valued at £45m – as per TeamTalk – the Dutchman could very well be on the move in January.

Gakpo had a fantastic record in the group stages of the World Cup, scoring in all three games.

He then started yesterday’s match against the United States in what on paper looked like a tight contest.

However, the Dutch flew out of the blocks, and in the end their quality showed as they came away with a 3-1 win.

Although Gakpo’s scoring run finally ended, he still had a great game.

He’s been one of the standout stars of the tournament, and the Dutch press were suitably impressed with his performance yesterday.

Gakpo impresses again at the World Cup

The 23-year-old was given a number of positive reviews in his homeland after yesterday’s match.

Voetbal Primeur gave him a seven out of 10 and said: “The group stage man can also become the knockout stage man.

“Gakpo didn’t score for the first time, but still made the difference with his actions, speed and power.

“Even in the back: the PSV player took a ball off the line shortly after the break.”

Football Oranje agreed, and gave Gakpo a 7.5 out of 10: “He did not contribute a goal but Gakpo showed flashes of his class with some lovely driving runs throughout the game.

“Was more involved than he had been in the previous three, just without scoring. Also cleared a USA effort off the line.”

Arsenal are expected to face plenty of competition to try and sign Gakpo.

Liverpool are also big fans, and will be hoping Virgil van Dijk can help convince him to head to Anfield.

Gakpo will still be concentrating on his World Cup campaign as the Dutch chase their first-ever title.

They face Lionel Messi and Argentina in the quarter finals next Friday.
