Lovren sends Arsenal's Saka Twitter message after Euro 2020 heartbreak

Former Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren sent a message to Arsenal ace Bukayo Saka after his Euro 2020 heartbreak.

The 19-year-old missed the fifth and crucial penalty as England lost to Italy.

Gareth Southgate’s side were dominated throughout proceedings. However, they managed to hold out for a 1-1 draw after extra time.

Saka missed his opportunity alongside Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford, whose efforts were saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma.

However, it was Saka who drew attention after his heartbreaking miss for the Three Lions. At 19, the Hale End academy product was the youngest member of the squad.

He had enjoyed a fantastic tournament up until the final, where he was dropped for Kieran Trippier. Southgate sought to change the England formation in a bid to thwart the Azzurri.

Speaking on Twitter, the Champions League winner claimed Saka showed courage.

Lovren said: “Saka don’t worry, you showed a lot of courage and it happens to the best, not your fault at all! You are a top player.”

TBR View: Arsenal need to hope Saka isn’t affected for long

Moments like last night can leave lasting effects on players, just ask Southgate.

Saka was visibly distraught following his miss in what was no doubt the worst moment of his fledgling career.

Up until now, the teenager has performed fearlessly in the face of no pressure. He turned up each week for Arsenal with next to no expectations placed on the Gunners.

All in all, it meant Saka was the club’s best player last season.

However, the knob has been cranked up sensationally and the youngster will be tested.

Arsenal need to ensure that Saka isn’t affected ahead of next season amid the rallying call from Lovren.
