Lo Celso and Afobe laud Matt Doherty after Tottenham win

Giovani Lo Celso and Benik Afobe were amongst those to take to Instagram to laud Matt Doherty following what was surely his best performance yet for Tottenham Hotspur on Monday night.

Doherty has slowly started to change perceptions in recent weeks. For a long while, it appeared that the Irishman was destined to leave sooner rather than later, having proved to have been an extremely poor signing.

However, the arrival of Antonio Conte appears to have sparked a dramatic turnaround. It started with an inspired cameo away at Leicester City in January.

He has now established himself as first-choice in that right wing-back role. And he has taken his form to another level in the last few games.

Doherty has one goal and three assists in his last two Premier League games for Tottenham. He brilliantly set up two goals for Harry Kane on Monday as Spurs thrashed Everton 5-0.

Perhaps it is too soon to say whether Doherty will be completely transformed at Tottenham. But with Conte at the helm, there was always likely to be one or two surprises along the way.

And it must not be forgotten how good he had previously been at Wolves when asked to play as an attacking wing-back.

Reports have claimed that Tottenham are now open to offers for Emerson Royal. That would certainly hint that Conte sees Doherty having more of a long-term future than the Brazilian.

Doherty has taken to social media following Spurs’ win. And amongst those to praise him following the game were Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Lo Celso and Afobe. The striker played with Doherty at Wolves before a move to Stoke City back in 2019.
