Liverpool might not end up doing big business in January and one player they certainly won’t be signing now is teenage sensation, Ricardo Pepi, who is set to join Wolfsburg instead.

The Reds have been monitoring Pepi for some time now. At the back end of October, it was revealed how Jurgen Klopp had identified the young MLS star as a serious talent. Liverpool, at the time, were among a host of European teams looking to sign the FC Dallas star.

However, according to Transfermarkt, Pepi is now set for Germany, with Wolfsburg agreeing to an £8.5m deal for the youngster. Pepi, 18, already has three goals in just seven international games for the USA. Last season in the MLS, he rifled in an impressive 13 goals to enhance his reputation further.

For Liverpool, missing out on Pepi to a German club will be a blow. The Reds are always looking to the future as well as the here and now. With Pepi, they’d have hoped to have similar success to that which they’ve had with Harvey Elliott and others of a similar age.

The Reds are expected to be quiet in January. Barring an injury crisis, Jurgen Klopp is said to be happy with his squad, despite losing Mo Salah and Sadio Mane to AFCON duty.

In fairness to the youngster, this is probably the best move for him. He’ll have seen how successful young players can be in Germany and jumped at the chance.

However, that’s not to say he won’t eventually wind up elsewhere. Liverpool have him firmly on their radar. They won’t simply stop watching him just because he’s moved to the Bundesliga. If anything, they’ll probably be able to watch him even more.

Ricardo Pepi is a serious talent. Don’t be surprised, then, if the Reds don’t go again for him in the coming years.
