Report: Liverpool one of five heavyweights after MLS star

CBS Sports claim FC Dallas sensation Ricardo Pepi has emerged as a target for Liverpool, and four others European heavyweights ahead of January.

Pepi, 18, has been incredible for Dallas during the 2021 season. Despite his tender age, he has already clocked up a huge 55 appearances for Dallas.

Almost half of those came in 2021, clocking up 27 outings for Dallas – and scoring a huge 13 goals. He has also laid on two assists for Dallas.

That form, though, has not gone unnoticed on the European stage. It is some of Europe’s biggest clubs considering a move too, with Liverpool in the race.

Joining Liverpool in the five-way chase are Inter Milan, Bayern Munich, Dortmund and Ajax are all keen – but he could be off to Wolfsburg.

Pepi has agreed personal terms with the Bundesliga side – but a fee is yet to be agreed with the club. Dallas want between £8.75million and £11million.

A move could happen in January but Dallas would prefer to wait until after the 2022 World Cup, keeping him for another season.

Pepi to Liverpool: Could Reds really go after a player from the MLS?

It would certainly be filed under the category of a surprise move. But Liverpool do require more depth up front – and Pepi would provide that.

Not only would he provide depth like Divock Origi currently does, but the three-time USA star would also give Liverpool a player with huge potential.

That is where he differs from Origi. Origi will not get better, while Pepi has a much better chance of overtaking Origi and breaking into the senior side.

For a fee that would only go as high as £11million, he is certainly worth the gamble. Liverpool would surely prove tempting for the Texas-born ace.
