Liverpool star Diogo Jota tragically passes away aged 28 after car accident

In a devastating development, Liverpool star Diogo Jota has passed away in a car accident.

The Liverpool forward, born in Porto, and his brother – Andre Silva – were both found dead at 23:30 BST on Wednesday 2nd July after a tyre exploded on his Lamborghini in Zamora, Spain, causing the vehicle to catch fire.

Diogo Jota dies after Lamborghini incident

The Spanish Guardia Civil have verbally shared details on the matter with the BBC which are as follows.

“The information we have so far is that the car, which was a Lamborghini, was in a road traffic accident and left the road due to a tyre blowout while overtaking.

“It was in the early hours, 00:30 local time (23:30 BST) in the municipality of Cernadilla in the province of Zamora.

“The car caught on fire and the two occupants were killed.”

Liverpool star had only recently married Rute Cardoso

This news is all the more heartbreaking when you consider Jota had only just married his childhood sweetheart, Rute Cardoso.

The pair – who had three children together – wed on 22nd June 2025.

What Liverpool have said about Diogo Jota

Liverpool have issued a statement on Jota, which says:

“Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota.

“The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre.

“Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss.

“We will continue to provide them with our full support.”

Jota – who Jurgen Klopp adored – won the Premier League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup with Liverpool, scoring 65 goals in 182 appearances across all competitions.

FC Porto issue statement

FC Porto – who Jota played for on loan from Atletico Madrid in the 2016/17 campaign – have also issued a statement regarding the man born in Porto.

It reads: “It is with shock and deep sorrow that we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who was also our athlete in the youth ranks.

“Rest in peace.”
