Liverpool rarely get it wrong in the transfer market nowadays.
In recent years, the Reds have found some genuine bargains, such as the £34m agreement with Roma for Mohamed Salah, the £8m signing of Andrew Robertson from Hull City, and also the £35m capture of Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton, to name a few.
Liverpool even managed to replace Jurgen Klopp effectively – as those at Anfield delved into the data to identify Arne Slot as their target, and the Dutchman now sits top of the Premier League.

However, there is a player Liverpool sold for peanuts back in 2016 who is now amongst the most creative players on the planet – even keeping up with Bukayo Saka for assists.
Luis Alberto blossoming after £3.3m Liverpool exit
Back in August 2016, Liverpool opted to sell Luis Alberto to Lazio for a sum of just £3.3m – which represented a loss on the initial £6.8m spent to sign him from Sevilla in June 2013.
The Spaniard struggled on Merseyside, providing just one assist and zero goals in 12 appearances before he was sold.
Now – however – Alberto is thriving in Saudi Arabia.
The man born in San Jose del Valle can boast nine assists from just ten Saudi Pro League appearances so far this season – along with two goals – keeping up with Saka who has ten assists in 12 Premier League outings this term.

Of course, we are by no means suggesting Liverpool were wrong to sell Alberto, who Everton wanted in 2020, after his struggles at Anfield, although it is certainly interesting to see how those who fail in one place thrive elsewhere as the 32-year-old excels with Al-Duhail.
Liverpool secured extra cash from Luis Alberto joining Al-Duhail
Just under a decade on from selling Alberto, who enjoyed life at Anfield, to Lazio in a £3.3m deal, Liverpool actually received an extra £2.4m cash injection back in June when the attacking midfielder moved to Saudi Arabia.
The Reds smartly inserted a 30% sell-on clause, which paid dividends when Alberto signed for Al-Duhail in an £8.4m transfer last summer.
Perhaps some of that can be put towards handing Salah a new contract – with Fenway Sports Group (FSG) yet to make progress in negotiations with the Egypt international, who walks away for free in July as things stand.
