Liverpool should test the water with Manchester City over £60m Bernardo Silva

Liverpool are probably among a number of clubs looking one with envy at Manchester City, after Pep Guardiola’s men added Jack Grealish yesterday.

City forked out a British record £100m fee to bring Grealish to The Etihad. It means that, once again, the powers that be at City have flexed their financial muscles to help support Guardiola and his team.

Of course, some in the City squad will have to make way. A number of fringe players could leave, while one of the big names being touted to move on is Bernardo Silva.

As we reported today, City are hoping to bring in £60m for Silva. Barcelona are keen, but their financial issues mean a deal is all but impossible.

But could Liverpool, themselves hoping for one more big splash in the market this summer, surprise everyone and put the money up to land Silva?

Big statement, albeit unlikely

Of course, we aren’t suggesting in anyway that this will be an easy deal to complete. Nor are we suggesting that City would even consider selling to Liverpool.

But the fact remains that Bernardo Silva is a world-class player. He’s won three Premier League titles, multiple cups, and has been key for Pep Guardiola down the years.

‘What a player, is all I can say,” Guardiola remarked about Silva back in February of this year. That statement is hard to argue with.

Liverpool, for all their quality, do need new additions. Especially in attacking areas. Yes, they’ve added at the back with Ibrahima Konate, but up top, they lacked a cutting edge last season at times.

Silva has that cutting edge in abundance. 35 City goals and 44 assists in just over 200 games, proves he can do the business in the final third.

Big money

Naturally, any move for Silva would need FSG’s backing in Liverpool. But what a statement signing it would be, and what a surprise.

Silva leaving for City is not something most people would even envisage as a possibility. But Jurgen Klopp is slowly but surely offloading fringe players, which suggests a big-money capture could be on the way.

The Portuguese’s ability to play in midfield, wide, or even as a false nine, would open up all sorts of opportunities for Klopp and his team.

So, while £60m is a lot of money, for a player like Bernardo Silva, it simply isn’t that much to ask. And with City willing to sell with Grealish in the house, the Reds could do far worse than test the water here.
