Liverpool fans urge their club to go after available Tottenham star Paulo Gazzaniga, on a free

Liverpool could be in need of a goalkeeper this summer and Tottenham Hotspur have decided to release Paulo Gazzaniga. The Argentine’s contract is about to expire, and Spurs have confirmed that he and Danny Rose will leave the club on free transfers – prompting reaction from Liverpool fans.

Currently behind Alisson in the Liverpool pecking order is Spanish veteran Adrian, and young Irish stopper Caoimhin Kelleher. The latter really needs to go on loan if he is to further his career, having tasted first-team game time between the sticks during 2020-21 – with Alisson injured.

So, if Kelleher goes, that leaves just Adrian. But the ex-West Ham United goalkeeper is out of contract at the end of June – like Gazzaniga – and realistically, he is not going to earn a new deal. The 34-year-old is more than likely to return to Spain, with numerous sides expected to be after him.

Liverpool, then, could do with an addition between the sticks. One that is more than happy to warm the bench and get upto 10 games a season. That could even be more if Alisson suffers injury, given the Brazilian has suffered numerous issues since Adrian arrived in 2019.

But they also need a goalkeeper that while happy on the bench, is also good enough to keep Liverpool competing with the best. When Adrian comes in for Alisson – there is still a significant drop off. That needs to change, and Gazzaniga can provide that for Liverpool.

On a free, a no-brainer for Liverpool to sign Tottenham’s Gazzaniga

The 29-year-old has been through ups and downs at Spurs. Signed by Mauricio Pochettino from Southampton after the Argentine gaffer had lured him to the Saints initially, Gazzaniga started as back-up to Hugo Lloris. He was even behind Michel Vorm to begin with.

But he surpassed Vorm and finally got a solid amount of games in 2019-20, when Lloris was injured. He played 25 of his 37 Spurs games in that season, conceding just 33 goals and keeping five clean sheets. He then went on loan to Elche, where he has only been used eight times in all competitions.

Now, Spurs have announced he will be offloaded on a free transfer. A one-time Argentina international, he has hardly been given a chance and needs a break. A move to Liverpool would see him get plenty of game time, even if he is not number one. He is the ideal cover for Alisson.

South American like Liverpool’s heroic first-choice stopper, Gazzaniga is excellent with the ball at his feet – something which Alisson struggled with. It is why Kelleher gets a chance over Adrian. Having a ball-playing stopper as back-up means Liverpool do not have to change.

So, Liverpool fans have urged their club to consider a move for the soon-to-be free agent – when his Tottenham contract expires. From June 1, Liverpool will be able to approach Gazzaniga on a free transfer, and a deal would be made official from July 1. One fan put it bluntly, “sell Adrian and sign him”.
