Liverpool fans react to John McGinn display in Scotland win

A number of Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to comment on John McGinn after the Aston Villa midfielder produced an outstanding display for Scotland in their win over Israel on Saturday.

Steve Clarke’s men have put themselves in a fantastic position in their World Cup qualifying group.

However, it looked set to be a long night at Hampden Park. They went 1-0 down inside five minutes.

But the Scots fought back. It was McGinn who equalised with a delicious finish into the far corner from the edge of the box.

Israel retook the lead shortly after. However, Scotland would score twice more, including a stoppage-time winner from Scott McTominay to bag the three points.

Clarke’s side are now four points clear of third place in their qualifying group. Nine points are still up for grabs.

Liverpool fans had plenty of reason to watch the contest. Andy Robertson was outstanding for the home side, providing two of the assists in the dramatic victory.

But it does appear that one of his international teammates caught the eye of a number of Reds fans on social media.

Reds fans laud John McGinn

McGinn has established himself as Scotland’s talisman in the middle of the park.

He is their top goalscorer in qualification, with his strike on Saturday proving to be his fourth of the campaign. Only 10 players have found the back of the net more often.

Only striker Lyndon Dykes had more attempts on goal than McGinn yesterday (Whoscored). Robertson meanwhile, was the only player to manage a greater number of key passes.

Obviously, McGinn’s performance will not have come as a surprise to followers of the Premier League. He has been a key man for Aston Villa for a number of years.

The 26-year-old has seven goals in the top-flight since the Villans sealed promotion. He also has eight assists.

He appears to have unlimited resources of energy and can play all over that midfield region. Few players seem to work harder for Dean Smith’s side.

He can get stuck in. But he appears to have looked to have made more of an impression in the final third this term, perhaps due to the sale of Jack Grealish.

As shown by Whoscored, his shots per game have risen from 1.2 last season to 1.7 this time around.

And for plenty of Liverpool fans, they would absolutely love to see McGinn move to Anfield in the future.

Of course, his relationship with Robertson would certainly help him settle in on Merseyside.

But they also feel that his relentlessness would make him invaluable to Jurgen Klopp’s side.

‘Need to see that in a Liverpool shirt’

The Reds do have plenty of options in the middle of the park. But there may soon be a space for an option who is at his absolute peak.

He would not come cheap. Reports over the summer claimed that he would cost more than £50 million.

But that report from The Athletic claimed that Klopp had asked Robertson about McGinn. So he is clearly a player that he admires.

And several Liverpool fans certainly feel the same…
