Liverpool might be flying in the Premier League again but there is an argument to be made that the club haven’t replaced Gini Wijnaldum in the midfield.
The Dutchman left Anfield on a free last summer and has since struggled to hold down a regular place with PSG.
Talk in January led to some believing Wijnaldum might end up back in England. Alas, nothing happened and the former Liverpool man remains in Paris with a big summer ahead of him. For the Reds, they remain in the hunt really for a long-term successor to Wijnaldum.

Yes, they have signed Luis Diaz out wide who looks outstanding. But in midfield, they can look light. Harvey Elliott’s injury exposed that, while James Milner is now 36 and Jordan Henderson 31. Essentially, Liverpool need to use this summer to land that key midfielder.
And they might just be about to land the perfect signing in Valencia midfielder, Carlos Soler.
Liverpool Chasing Soler This Summer
As we covered on TBR yesterday, reports from Spain have claimed that Liverpool have initiated contact with some of Soler’s entourage.
Soler is going into the last 12 months of his contract with Valencia and there is no sign of a fresh deal just yet. The Reds, then, are said to be ready to make their move. And it would seem a smart strategy.
The Spanish midfielder is perfectly adept in midfield, both centrally and to the right. Perfect, really, when you look at where Wijnaldum operated and where Jordan Henderson does a lot of the time. Remarkably, Soler has a £140m release-clause in his contract. Remember, that is more than double the £65m or so one that Erling Haaland has, such is how high Valencia rate him.

Of course, Liverpool won’t be paying that much. Previous talks of a deal worth just over £30m would seem more sensible, and the Reds have shown with Diaz they aren’t scared to splash if the deal is right.
The summer will be a year since Wijnaldum left. And if the Reds can sign Soler, then you’d have to say they have finally got the right man. Spanish teammate Ferran Torres has previously given a glowing reference of Soler, saying:
“He is the complete midfielder and can act as a 6, 8 or 10; he has power, arrives in the box and can score. I know him and I know that he can still bring his game to the next level. He has taken on responsibility in the team too.”
Certainly, that is enough to suggest Soler is more than capable of being Liverpool’s new midfield mainstay.
