Lineker reacts on Twitter to second-half incident in Liverpool win

Gary Lineker has taken to Twitter to label the decision to award Liverpool a late penalty in their win at Crystal Palace ‘genuinely appalling’.

The Reds have kept their Premier League title hopes alive with an important victory at Selhurst Park. They are now nine points adrift of Manchester City with a game in hand.

But Liverpool were some way short of their best against the Eagles. They had gone 2-0 up during the first-half. However, Palace were much the better side after the break.

The home side had got one goal back. And the Reds were thankful to Alisson for producing a big display, and making a number of brilliant stops to keep Liverpool in front.

There was a moment of late controversy to help Liverpool seal the game. Fabinho scored from the penalty spot after Kevin Friend overturned his initial decision to not award Jurgen Klopp’s side a spot-kick.

Diogo Jota went down after colliding with Vicente Guaita. The Portuguese knocked the ball past the Palace goalkeeper before going to ground.

The VAR took an incredibly long time to look at the incident. And eventually, Friend was advised to go and look at the monitor. Once he had looked several more times, he decided to reverse his decision and give a penalty.

It seemed to be a slightly clumsy challenge from the Palace goalkeeper. However, Jota was not getting onto the end of the ball. And it did appear that the forward may have made a late move to ensure that they did come together.

Certainly, few Liverpool fans appear to feel that the right decision was made. And some pundits have expressed some incredibly strong views about the call.
