‘Like what I see’: Moyes says 23-year-old has impressed him in West Ham training, but he won't start Sunday

West Ham United manager David Moyes has been impressed by new striker Gianluca Scamacca in training, but the Italian won’t start against Manchester City on Sunday.

Football London have provided coverage of Moyes’ first press conference of the season.

And when asked to give an update on Scamacca, Moyes confirmed it was unlikely he would feature on Sunday.

“Gianluca has only just joined us and he’s a little bit behind so I’m not expecting him to be available this weekend,” he said.

“He’s not played any minutes in pre-season so it makes it very difficult to put him out so soon.

“He has trained but not as regular and as consistent and the transfer took quite a bit off him. We’ve got him in, I like what I see.”

Scamacca joined West Ham from Serie A side Sassuolo in a £35.5m deal, becoming their most expensive transfer of the summer.

The Italian international is likely to provide competition up-front for Michail Antonio, and he’s already been described as one of the signings of the summer.

Moyes impressed by Scamacca in training

Although Scamacca might not be starting on Sunday, Moyes’ comments are very encouraging.

Scamacca joined the club less than two weeks ago, but for Moyes to already be happy with how he’s training is a good sign going forward.

The 23-year-old isn’t the only new signing that Moyes won’t have available for their opening match against Nottingham Forest.

Centre-back Nayef Aguerd was signed at the beginning of the window from Rennes, but suffered an ankle injury in West Ham’s pre-season friendly against Rangers and has already had surgery.

This means in all likelihood that Antonio starts against his former club, and he’s shared whether or not he’ll celebrate at the City Ground if he scores.
