Lewis Miley shares the four-word message Kieran Trippier told him when coming on yesterday

Newcastle United stepped up their preparations for the Premier League restart with a 2-1 win over Rayo Vallecano yesterday.

Sean Longstaff and Chris Wood scored either side of half-time to earn The Magpies another victory.

It was also a special moment for 16-year-old Lewis Miley, who spoke to the club’s official website after the match.

Miley played his first senior game at St. James’ Park yesterday, coming on for a late cameo.

He wasn’t the only youngster given an opportunity yesterday, with Dylan Stephenson and Jay Turner-Cooke also brought on.

Miley is a central midfielder, and was part of the first-team squad that headed to Saudi Arabia last month.

He’s been handed the number 81 shirt this season, which shows just how far away from the senior set-up he was considered at the beginning of the campaign.

Miley, an England under-17 international, has already stepped up from the under-18s to the under-21s this season.

For Miley to play his first home senior game – albeit in a friendly – is a massive achievement.

In Eddie Howe, he has a manager who has been happy to trust young talent in the past.

The recent progression of Elliot Anderson proves that Newcastle’s academy products do have a route to the first team.

The teenager spoke to the club’s website after the match, and was in a jubilant mood.

Miley’s home debut in front of his family and 34,000 Newcastle fans isn’t a moment he’ll forget in a hurry.

He also shared the words of advice Kieran Trippier shared with him when he came on for the England full-back.

“It was a great experience to play with those who have competed right at the top level and it makes me want to continue doing that in the future.

“I was buzzing when I got called down the sideline to be brought on. I came on for Kieran Trippier and he told me to ‘go and enjoy myself’ which was great encouragement for me.

“I couldn’t believe it, really. As a supporter of the club, I’ve watched the first-team play at St. James’ Park nearly all my life so to be out there myself in front of so many fans was a great feeling. All of my family were watching, too, so that was even better.”

Trippier straight back into action after World Cup

Newcastle fans will be pleased to see Trippier already back in the side after his involvement with England at the World Cup.

He earned plenty of plaudits when called upon in Qatar, but has now resumed his role as one of Newcastle’s senior players.

Miley would have been encouraged by Trippier’s advice before coming playing his first game at St. James’ Park.

He, and plenty of Newcastle fans, will be hoping it’s the first of many for his boyhood club.
