‘Deadly’: Chris Sutton left amazed by £12m Newcastle player’s World Cup display yesterday
Trippier has been in excellent form for Newcastle this season and fully deserved his call-up for the World Cup.
The 32-year-old is proving to be an astute signing for Eddie Howe as the Magpies picked him up for just £12 million back in January (Sky Sports).
The former Atletico Madrid full-back has played a pivotal role in Newcastle’s flying start to the season which sees them sitting third in the Premier League table.
Trippier has been an ever present part of the joint-best defence in the league but it was his attacking qualities that impressed Sutton yesterday.
Sutton amazed by Trippier
England thrashed Iran 6-2 in their World Cup opener yesterday, with Bukayo Saka, Raheem Sterling, Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish getting amongst the goals.
Gareth Soutgate’s men were a real threat from set-pieces on the day, just as they were in the last World Cup back in 2018.
Trippier played a key role in this part of England’s threat too as he consistently delivered dangerous corners.
And Sutton has praised the Newcastle man for his crossing ability, while handing him a rating of 7.5 for his display yesterday.
“Trippier’s balls into the box were deadly, one cross leading to a Maguire header against the crossbar,” Sutton wrote for the Daily Mail.
“Newcastle’s right back is reliable down that flank and with no Reece James, this set-piece specialist showed why he’s a sure starter for England.”
Trippier has formed a brilliant partnership with Miguel Almiron on the right-hand side for Newcastle this season.
And he managed to hit it off with Saka yesterday too as the pair combined on numerous occasions.
The former Tottenham man will be hoping to keep his place in the England side once Kyle Walker returns from injury. And Trippier will have certainly impressed Southgate yesterday.
