Report: Leicester have Jannik Vestergaard in mind to replace Wesley Fofana

Leicester City are keen on signing Southampton and Denmark defender, Jannik Vestergaard, as they seek a replacement for Wesley Fofana.

Fofana is due to miss a big chunk of the season with a broken leg. The defender sustained the horrendous injury during a pre-season game with Villarreal last week.

The Foxes, then, need new faces in the door, given Fofana’s influence. And now, Talksport claim that Vestergaard is on on Brendan Rodgers’ list of potential signings.

It’s claimed that a deal could cost the Foxes around £20m, although Southampton may also accept a bid as low as £15m if the defender fancies the move to the Midlands.

Vestergaard proved himself last season with the Saints and has been a key figure under Ralph Hasenhuttl. In the Euros, the giant defender also played a key role as Denmark surprised everyone to reach the semi-finals.

Spurs are also said to be keen on Vestergaard. As we reported two weeks back, Nuno Santo is said to be an admirer of the defender.

Fofana irreplaceable but Vestergaard a good shout

You simply don’t replace someone like Fofana with ease. He was superb last season and proved to be an inspired piece of business for the Foxes.

But Leicester do at least need to try and plug the gap and they could do a lot worse than Vestergaard.

The Southampton man is solid, big, and already proven at Premier League level. At 29, he has the experience needed too, and his performances in the Euros also showed his class.

While £20m is a decent outlay for a player who will be second-fiddle once Fofana returns, it could be a case of needs must for the Foxes.
