Leeds wanted Ryan Kent from Rangers but he's yet to score a goal this season

Leeds United and Rangers are both struggling to live up to their performances and expectations from last season as things stand.

The Whites head to Newcastle tonight looking for a first win of the season.

For Rangers, four wins from five in the league hasn’t quite masked over some all too familiar problems when it comes to European nights. The Gers lost out again this week, with Lyon running out 2-0 winners at Ibrox last night.

One of the key figures in recent times has been winger, Ryan Kent. The former Liverpool man influential last term, netting double figures in terms of league goals falling one short in the assists column.

Naturally, interest was high in the summer, and The Athletic said Leeds were considering a deal for Kent which could have been worth up to £20m.

But while last season counts for a lot, Kent’s form this season suggests that – so far – Leeds might have made the right call in avoiding a deal.

Ryan Kent suits Leeds but he must rediscover golden touch

Obviously, it’s impossible to simply say Kent is a bad player based on a patch of indifferent form this year. He’s proven during his time at Ibrox he can do the business.

But Kent’s performances and lack of contribution will be a concern to Rangers fans and Steven Gerrard. So far, he’s failed to score. On top of that, he’s provided just the single assist in all competitions.

For Leeds, who will no doubt still be looking in on Kent this season, it will prove to them that the winger still needs to find that consistency. Especially so, if he does move to the Premier League.

Of course, Kent has ample time on his side to get things back on track. He’s a player who normally exudes confidence and that spills over into his teammates.

If Rangers want to turn their European fortunes around, then Kent is going to be crucial. For Leeds, it’s a case of waiting and seeing. If he can hit form, then expect them to come knocking again in 2022.
